21. Mallrats (Not available to stream on Netflix Instant Watch)
Continuing on my Kevin Smith movie run, Mallrats is the second of Smith’s theatrical films. Once again, the movie centers around 2 male characters, Brodie (Jason Lee) and TS (Jeremy London).
TS and Brodie start their day the same way, both being dumped by their girlfriends. In an effort to make themselves feel better, they take a trip to the mall, and the rest of their day is spent trying to sabotage a TV game show, wreaking havoc with the Easter Bunny and eventually trying to win back their girlfriends.
Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) also appear in Mallrats, in a large capacity as they try all day to dodge mall security guard LaFours and shut down the TV game show. Their blueprints are some of my favorite parts of the movie.
I forgot to mention that Brodie’s girlfriend Rene is played by Shannen Doherty, who was deep into her run on Beverly Hills, 90210 at the time.
Comic legend Stan Lee also appears as a spirit guide of sorts to Brodie.
One of my favorite actors, Ben Affleck, also appears in Mallrats as resident d-bag Shannon Hamilton.
Mallrats isn’t a cinematic masterpiece – it didn’t do very well in theatres when it was released. I saw it when a friend brought me the VHS tape in college when I was having a bad day, and it did the trick. The movie is really funny and for me is something that is re-watchable, multiple times.
The Mallrats Collector’s Edition DVD is available from Amazon for $6.49.
