I love the Plinky prompts, sometimes it is just nice to be able to pick up a little topic and write something. 

So, how has my life most benefitted from the Internet?

 
Thanks for the husband, Internet!

• Met my husband online in 2000 – this is the best thing the Internet has done for me and will likely remain so for the rest of my life.
• I work on a variety of websites, my job is completely related to what is happening online, and I have probably been saved from layoffs in the past 2 years because of it.
• I have made some great friends online, some of whom I’ve never met in person, but who I talk to and interact with more than some of my family members!

I don’t have a lot of time to focus on this, so I’ll keep it short, and bulleted.

• Good blog
• On the board of Etsy, which I am obsessed with right now
• Board of Directors member, Creative Commons
• Many more accomplishments, there’s a big list in her Wikipedia entry, which she says is pretty accurate!

However, my girl Caterina was cofounder of Flickr, which is why I’m throwing her a blog post today.  I have significant love for Flickr, it’s been the one site I have gone to consistently for years (without having the lulls that have always happened with other sites). 

Ultimately, I’m jealous that I was able to find this many hot links for one woman! Go Caterina!

So the blog always looks right in Firefox and IE7 isn’t a problem, but IE6 pushes the right column all the way to below the posts. What is going on?

This is really frustrating me.

I have upgraded from my old blog, Pop Obsession, to this space where it seems more appropriate to share everything I want to share (in a public forum, at least).

“Parents experience lower levels of emotional well-being, less frequent positive emotions and more frequent negative emotions than their childless peers,” says Florida State University’s Robin Simon, a sociology professor who’s conducted several recent parenting studies, the most thorough of which came out in 2005 and looked at data gathered from 13,000 Americans by the National Survey of Families and Households. “In fact, no group of parents—married, single, step or even empty nest—reported significantly greater emotional well-being than people who never had children. It’s such a counterintuitive finding because we have these cultural beliefs that children are the key to happiness and a healthy life, and they’re not.”

While I know that I will eventually have at least 1 kid, I don’t want that child to be the end-all, be-all thing in my life. I do expect that creating and raising a human being will be a terribly challenging and hopefully fulfilling experience, I do not expect it to be the only thing that I do in my life, because no matter how great my kid(s) turn out to be, if I don’t do anything of value myself, I will just be perpetuating the species, and that’s all, and that is not enough.

I have watched some people around me become obsessed with their children in a way that completely suppresses anything they might want or even need, which is the scariest thing I can imagine.
